BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Anthony Lloyd Edwards knew everyone on campus and helped more students than we will ever know. One memorial, perhaps more than any other, seemed to summarize the attitude shared by countless individuals who knew him, were influenced by him, or had the distinct pleasure of working beside him:
We remember Anthony
For the life his lived,
For the lives he touched,
And for the privilege
That it was to share his life.
Anthony, a native of Denmark, South Carolina, was born on November 11, 1956. He died on April 4, 2007, the victim of a year-long battle with cancer. He is survived by his mother, Annie Mae Crum Edwards Wroten, stepfather, Leroy Wroten; two sisters, Linda Edwards Wise and Eartha Deloris Edwards; one niece, Melvilyn Shontay Edwards, and many cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Anthony graduated from Denmark-Olar High School where he was class salutatorian. He received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of South Carolina.
Dr. Edwards began his career at USC as a work-study student in the Graduate School. In 1983 he became full-time permanent staff, beginning a long and distinguished career with the Graduate School--ultimately ascending to assistant dean. In addition to his service as a staff member in almost every facet of graduate education, Anthony was a dedicated teacher. He taught in University 101, the College of Education, and the Department of Women’s Studies. Anthony’s passion was helping people. He used his affiliation with the African-American Studies Program, the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, and various student organizations to empower students to help themselves and others. As assistant dean of the Graduate School, he used his policy-making influence to further advance student services. He was a dedicated student advocate and mentor.
Anthony enjoyed music, art, literature, and was an avid movie-goer. A sometimes shy and private man, Dr. Edwards was assertive and passionate about his roles as mentor, teacher, and friend. He was equally passionate about learning. Anthony was loyal, dependable, and loved by all who knew him. For many, he was the institutional memory of the Graduate School.
